Founded on over 25 years of experience

Magnus Home Improvements is a home-run business operated by Ryan and Emily. Ryan was inspired to pursue carpentry while learning about radically sustainable buildings known as earthships. After completing a workshop on the first earthship built in Ontario, he began his work in carpentry with Toronto Wood Windows over 25 years ago. There he completed custom window installations and fine carpentry work in Toronto’s Rosedale and Forest Hill neighborhoods. Ryan was hooked and quickly learned the artistry involved in wood work. He has since worked as a framing carpenter, where he mastered hand-cut roofs, and as a forming carpenter, building radius and other complex concrete forms. He has spent the last 10 years working as a carpenter and contractor in home renovations, refining his skills in finishing carpentry.

Emily is a PhD student at the University of Toronto studying regenerative sustainability and community engagement. She received a bursary from Sustainable Building Canada in 2023 for her research focus on home retrofits. Beyond her administrative duties and occasional use of the skill saw, she looks for the regenerative potential in each project we take on.

We love to showcase beautiful wood grain or lay natural stone. Working with these natural materials daily connects us to the environment. But the building and renovation industry can be tough on the ecosystem with all the glues, solvents, and dyes. That’s why we do our part where we can. In a recent house top-up in East York, we reused the original roof’s Fir collar ties and rafters to frame newly insulated walls in the basement. Further, this website is hosted by a company that accounts for the energy they pull from the grid three times over with renewable forms of energy.
